Reading manager Brian McDermott has wished Gylfi Sigurdsson the best of luck in his loan spell at Premier League Swansea, after he signed for the Swans yesterday on loan for the rest of the season.

‘The Sig’ came through the Reading academy, breaking into the first team in 2009 under former boss Brendan Rodgers, going onto score over 20 goals that season for the Royals.

He attracted many suitors from over the globe but he moved to German side Hoffenheim in the summer of 2010, for a record club fee of around £8 million. However, despite winning Fans Player of the Season, he struggled to maintain a starting spot.

McDermott told the official RFC site: ”He came to see us last week, saw the manager there [Swansea]. Play him in the right position and he’ll score goals. He’s a player who can play off the striker and score goals, he scored 15 goals for me from December, and a lot of them were matchwinners.’

‘He loves Reading, he loves his time at Reading and that’ll never go away. We’ve known him since he was 12, he’s a terrific lad, a really good professional, a really, really good player and I’m sure he’ll do well.’

There was very optimistic rumour flirting round the Madejski Stadium that Sigurdsson could be rejoining the Royals on loan but with the Premier League vultures eyeing hi, it was always going to be unlikely.
