Reading manager Brian McDermott has admitted that he was shell-shocked that the Royals somehow squandered a 4-0 lead at home against Arsenal in the Capital One Cup.
The Berkshire side found themselves 4-0 up against Arsene Wenger’s side after just 37 minutes of the match, but Theo Walcott got a goal back just before half-time, which McDermott pinpoints as Reading’s main downfall. Reading went onto lose the game 7-5 in a thrilling encounter, but still a very frustrating evening for all Royals fans.
Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, McDermott said: ‘I went in at half time really unhappy because I felt that we had given them an opportunity and that proved to be the case. We have to clear our lines and be better in that situation. The goal gave them a lift, if you give good players a lift then they`ll take it.’
‘You saw some really good players tonight taking an opportunity they shouldn’t have even had. You can’t give people opportunities the way we did tonight. At 5-5, I had my penalty takers written down, I thought we’ll take that and go from there. At that point you do what you have to do, but we haven’t done that as a team this season.’
