Reading manager Brian McDermott has admitted he was shocked at the reaction from Royals fans after their loss to Wigan, receiving some criticism from fans at the game.

The Royals went into last week’s crucial game with optimism, after a very good record at home over the past few months. However, McDermott’s side went down 3-0 to the Latics, that left Reading second from bottom in the table. This result sparked much criticism of the side and Brian himself, which confused the 51-year old.

Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, McDermott said: ‘The majority of our fans are fantastic. They understand the heritage of this club and where we have come from. I would say that in the last 10 years or so, Reading Football Club has known nothing but success. A few fans sitting behind the dugout were getting on to me during the game which was unusual.’

‘I didn’t react to it but I was a little surprised if I’m honest. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest but I must stress it is not helpful for the players. I understand the crowd will be unhappy when you lose a game, but all I know is that everything went against us on the day, it really did.’

Brian can focus on the past all he wants, but the reality is now, as much as we are grateful to be in this division, we expect the side to at least compete in it. I wouldn’t place too much of the blame on McDermott himself, as the players have a lot to answer for after their gutless performances. Lets just hope we have a response on Saturday.
