McDermott reflects on ‘incredible’ season

Reading boss Brian McDermott has reflected on a truly incredible season for the Royals, saying how he side were the best team over 46 games.

The 50-year old witnessed his side go down 2-0 to play-off contenders Birmingham, but he was not to let the result bring his team down in what has been one of the best seasons in the club’s history. Adam Rooney and Wade Elliot scored the goals for the Blues, who gave the Royals fans and players a great reception at the start of the game.

Speaking to the official RFC website, McDermott said: ‘It has been an incredible season. When you think early on, we lost five on the spin, to have achieved what he have done is incredible. All the credit goes to the lads, the players, the staff. Jobi McAnuff to lift that trophy tomorrow, I am delighted for him.’

‘I thought we played well, really well. The three penalties in the second half were all soft, including ours. Once again though I was proud of our players and they gave everything, but it’s not about today, it’s about 46 games, our fans behind the goal and picking up the trophy tomorrow. Over 46 games the best team wins it, and we have done that so we’re the best team.’

Due to Football League regulations, Reading were not allowed to receive the Championship trophy at St Andrews yesterday so will instead be presented at the Promotion Celebration day tomorrow. McDermott, his staff and the squad are also jetting out to Spain on Tuesday for a few days to celebrate their superb achievement.
