McDermott: It was a fabulous day

Reading manager Brian McDermott has once again heavily praised his team’s ability and class, as they won their eight consecutive game.

The 50-year old witnessed his side beat play-off contenders Leicester City 3-1 at the Madejski Stadium. A superb strike from Mikele Leigertwood opened the scoring yesterday afternoon, with goals from Jason Roberts and Simon Church adding the finishing touch to a decent performance from the Royals.

McDermott told the official RFC website: ‘In the first half we were very good. We could have been two or three up because there were a couple of clearances off the line early on. We got in at 1-0 and with a clean sheet which was good for us. It was a brilliant goal – the roll back to him and a fantastic strike from Leigertwood.’

‘They had a real go at us but they didn’t really create too much I didn’t think. And the second goal was really important – a terrific goal thanks to great play down the right by Noel and Robbo put it away. Sometimes you have to stay in games, when the opposition have got a bit of the play, are having a few opportunities, our players do the right things, get the nitty gritty right, the details that are really important.’

This crucial win puts Reading on level points with second placed West Ham and just three points off league leaders Southampton, with the Royals having a game in hand on the Saints. The game in hand will be on Tuesday night against relegation-threatened Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium.
