McDermott: I feel no pressure

Reading manager Brian McDermott has said that he does not fear for his job, despite his side falling back into the relegation zone.

The former Slough boss has been on the end of some criticism from Reading fans over the past couple of weeks, questioning his capability as a Premier League manager. The Royals have now lost two on the bounce, following successive defeats to Wigan and Aston Villa, with both games having late goals to see off McDermott’s men.

Speaking to BBC Sport, McDermott said: ‘I’ve never had any doubts. I know how close we are. We do the right things every day and if we keep doing that, the right results will come our way, I’m absolutely convinced of that. We need to have some kind of realism about where we have come from and I think the majority of our fans have got that.’

‘They are really enjoying what they are watching at the minute. But I’m not stupid, we need results and we want results and that’s what makes our fans happy. I don’t feel under any pressure to survive. You put yourself under pressure because you want to do well for the fans. What I have here is a good bunch of people, great staff and players.’

There is no questioning Brian’s commitment to the club, but certain aspects need to improve. Substitutions are being made far too late to affect the game and our overall play seems very much outdated in this division. As much as fans may not like it, I think the return of Danny Guthrie could change our fortunes.
