McCarthy – ‘I cocked up!’

McCarthy is highly thought of at the Madejski Stadium and has been sent on loan to Brentford to gain some first team experience, after a similar spell at Yeovil last term. However his debut did not got to plan, and he has admitted an error that gifted Walsall their opening goal in the weekend’s 2-1 defeat.


Speaking to The Hounslow Chronicle, he said, ‘I take full responsibility for the first goal. Being a wet pitch, I thought the ball was going to slip through to me. I made the striker’s mind up for him by coming out – I should’ve stayed at home.’


He can be pleased with the rest of his display in the game though and the fact he walked straight into the team. He is looking to emulate Ben Hamer, who had 2 fantastic loan spells at Griffin Park.
