Match Review: The Super Sub for done it again!

With great thanks to Vital Reading’s new, aspiring writer Andrew Wearing, we have a match review of our superb victory over Newcastle on Saturday.

Teams:

Newcastle: Krul, Coloccini, Santon, Williamson, Debuchy, Cabaye, Anita, Gutierrez, Marveaux, Ameobi and Cisse.
Subs: Bigirimana for Cabaye (74th minute), Obertan for Anita (80th minute) and Perch for Marveaux (65th minute).

Reading: Federici, Pearce, Mariappa, Harte, Kelly, Leigertwood, McAnuff, Kebe, Guthrie, Pogrebnyak, McCleary.
Subs: Le Fondre for Guthrie (70th minute) and Akpan for McCleary (64th minute)

Reading`s super sub Adam Le Fondre scored two in six minutes as Reading continue their charge towards safety. The win came as a relief for Reading fans since the result meant it was Readings first ever win at Newcastle in eight attempts which dates all the way back to 1900.
Reading proved hard to break down but Cabaye`s exquisite free kick opened the scoring for Newcastle after 36 minutes. Federici had produced a few world class saves prior to the free kick but he could have done nothing to stop Cabaye`s curling free kick.

Reading were very poor in the first half and created only a single chance which feel to Pogrebnyak, but he couldn`t guide the ball into the net after a great run by Gareth McCleary. Reading have struggled away from home throughout the season so with Newcastle 1-0 up the Reading fans were expecting another away loss but shortly after the free kick Reading were centimetres from making it 1-1. Ian Harte struck in one of his trademark free kicks which subsequently hit Jonas Gutierrez`s knee but unfortunately just missed the net.

Brian McDermott made two changes, which saw Gareth McCleary make way for Hope Akpan (Premier League debut for Hope, who recently signed from Crawley for £300,000) and Danny Guthrie (Former Toon) made way for Adam Le Fondre.

Le Fondre had only been on the pitch for a single minute when he made the scores level. An excellent ball from Mikele Leigertwood to Jimmy Kebe allowed Kebe to put in a pin point cross for Le Fondre and with his first touch he bundled the ball into the back of the net. That was Le Fondre`s ninth goal of the season and Reading were right back in this game. The Toon fans started to get on the backs of their players which showed how Newcastle had been rattled by Le Fondre`s first touch of the game.

Reading started to get a grip on the game after the goal and Reading then made it 2-1 and that man Le Fondre DID IT AGAIN! Jobi McAnuff crossed in from the left, Kebe headed it to Hope Akpan`s foot, who scuffed his shot and Le Fondre somehow expertly placed the ball passed Tim Krul at his near post. Newcastle really struggled after this and they only created one clear cut chance which fell to Cisse, in the dying seconds of the match but he fired hopelessly over the bar from 9 yards.

Reading showed why they should remain in the Premier League, with their fighting attitude and their never say never approach Reading now have the grounds to build on this result and hopefully get something out the game when we play Chelsea on the 30th January at the Madejski Stadium. URZZZ
