Coppell Preparing To Take A Break

Reading may soon have to face up to the prospect of having to look for a new manager with the reports that Steve Coppell is planning on taking a break from football management.

It would appear that Coppell’s previous thoughts that he only wants footballers at Reading who are fully committed and want to play for the club to be at the club are extended to himself as well, as he has told The Sun that he looking to take a break from the game: “I’m looking very shortly at having some time off.

“My first stint at Crystal Palace was nine years, bits here and there, and then Brentford, Brighton, and four years here. I am probably due a break.

“I’d do what Paul Jewell has done, play a bit of golf, get out of the environment a bit, and then try to re-educate. I’d love to go and watch all the top managers here and abroad.

“I can’t enjoy management. I work all week to win a game. If we win I have an unbeatable high for 20 minutes, but then it’s thinking about the next game.

“If we are beaten, it’s a bottomless pit. It goes through my mind when I get beat, do I need this?”

The suggestion is that 52-year-old Coppell feels that he has taken Reading as far as he can, so much like the man that he mentioned Paul Jewell did when he had the same thoughts about life with Wigan, he is preparing to take a break.

It is not sure if/when this will happen, but even by Coppell’s own standards he has appeared disillusioned with life this season so a departure from the Madejski Stadium does seem likely sooner or later.
