Brynjar Gunnarsson has joined fellow central midfielder Marek Matejovsky on the injured list following an accidental collision with a team mate in training.

The Iceland international, who has only just recovered from a groin injury, is to have a scan on his knee to determine the extent of the damage.

Gunnarsson missed much of last season due to injury and with the new Championship season fast approacing, this will be a big blow to the 32 year-old.

When asked about the extent of Bryn’s injury, Reading boss Steve Coppell admitted he feared the worst.

He said, ‘He has damaged his knee and we fear some real damage, but until we have had the scan we don’t know the extent.

‘If it’s medial damage then it could be six to eight weeks, but until we get the results we don’t know what the reality is.’

With James Harper looking likely to move on, Matejovsky still sidelined and Andre Bikey set to miss the start of the season due to international duty, Coppell could well step up his search for a new midfielder, with Crystal Palace’s Ben Watson topping his wish list.
