Adkins: We had chances

Nigel Adkins seemed quite pleased with his side’s showing, despite their late loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Royals boss would have been disappointed to see his side go down by a single goal, scored late on by Stevie May with a deflected free kick. We had plenty of chances before the 83rd minute winner, including a first half penalty kick, which was won and missed by Glenn Murray.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: ‘We’ve come here in front of a big crowd and we’ve kept them very quiet in the first half. I’m not sure Mikkel had a shot to save all game, until the very end with a deflected shot. The team has worked really hard and we created several chances ourselves. We should have scored from the penalty spot.’

‘In the end, man of the match Westwood saved it with his feet, he’s made a couple of really good saves – Jake Cooper from point blank range, a long range effort from Nick Blackman, we created opportunities to go and win but as we leave the scoreline ultimately is 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday.’

The gaffer has every right to be pleased with our performance, as we certainly didn’t deserve to lose the game, as we kept Wednesday very quiet throughout. We couldn’t do much about the winning goal in all fairness, but it was a punishment for not taking our earlier chances.
