The Championship season continued with the latest round of games played over the weekend.

A limited amount of games due to the FA Cup didn’t see too much change in the top half. However, Burton’s win took them out of the relegation zone.

Here’s a round up of the Championship action from the other games played.

Results

Saturday 28th January 2017 – CHAMPIONSHIP
Norwich City 2-0 Birmingham City 15:00
Preston North End 1-1 Ipswich Town 15:00
Queens Park Rangers 1-2 Burton Albion 15:00
Reading 2-1 Cardiff City 15:00
Rotherham United 0-1 Barnsley 15:00

A third win in four for Norwich took them to within two points of a play-off place. Birmingham haven’t won in seven – Gianfranco Zola hasn’t won at all since taking over – with this 2-0 defeat at Carrow Road increasing the gap between them and the top 6 with the Blues almost as close to the relegation zone as the play-offs.

Preston grabbed a last minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw to make it five unbeaten – with just one of the last nine lost – against Ipswich. The Tractor Boys did end a sequence of results that would have seen them beaten had the run gone on in such fashion.

QPR saw a four game unbeaten run – three had been won – come to an end when relegation threatened Burton went away from Loftus Road with a 2-1 win. This rare away win – only a third win in the last 10 games played – for the Brewers took them out of the relegation zone.

The gap between Reading and Newcastle – who do have a game in hand – was closed to six points after a 2-1 win over Cardiff. This victory also took the Royals a point above Leeds into 3rd with defeat meaning the Bluebirds – who had previously been four unbeaten – have now lost successive games.

Rotherham will almost certainly be relegated this season as a 20th defeat – the have only won four of the 28 played – means the Millers are 11 points from safety with a poor goal difference too. Barnsley on the other hand moved to within a point of a play-off place after this 1-0 win at the New York Stadium.
