Vital QPR on Gorkss

1) What are his strengths?

Kaspars is very strong in the air, and generally speaking works well as part of a unit. What he does may not be immediately noticeable, but it’s no coincidence that our defence become impeccably strong with the presence of the Latvian in the back four.

Aerially he will be domineering and is also capable of bagging a goal or two – another good contribution during both his time at Blackpool and at Queens Park Rangers.

2) What are his weaknesses?

The main one is pace – he can tend to get caught out with a ball over the top, the pacy movement of a forward, or just being wrong footed when the ball is moved around quickly – this probably contributed as to why QPR decided against keeping what is a useful defender.

Cost of the time he worked well as part of the unit, but on occasions his concentration would lapse and that is something to guard against.

3) Is he versatile? Can he play anywhere across the back four?

I wouldn’t say versatility is a strong point – he is primarily a central defender and I wouldn’t expect him to feature anyone else. His aforementioned lack of pace and mobility is a key cause as to why he shouldn’t be considered a full-back.

4) Are you shocked/ disappointed by this loss?

A tad surprised I must admit – but his sale was beneficial in both terms of ownership in fairness. Initially he was a player that could raise funds for extra additions, and now he is a player we can offload with a view to bringing in more talented players.

Then I heard we were selling him, I was a tad disappointed as I didn’t think the likes of Gabbidon and Hall were as useful at the back – but I hope this sale is with a view to bolstering the defence with a better calibre of defender.

5) Was he crucial in your promotion season last term?

I would say the back five – including Paddy Kenny – were a tremendous unit. There wasn’t a specific individual in the back four I would say stood out for me. In their own way they had their strengths and frailties, but as a unit they proved formidable, as Reading found to their peril twice last season, against ten men might I add!
