Ok so after just 5 games we have to have a break in league fixtures for the international break but this gives us a chance to take stock and prepare properly with our new signings ahead of the home game with Doncaster next Saturday. So with the likes of Howard and O`Dea joining the squad, Vital Reading looks at which of our young players has done enough to stay in the team.
Jem Karacan
One of the older young players as he broke through into the squad last season but looks good for that extra bit of experience and sitting in front of the back 4 in the holding role he looks a fantastic player. Being in a three man midfield seems to suit him and his ability of win and keep hold of the ball would see him as one of the first names on the team sheet. Verdict – Guaranteed to keep place
Alex Pearce
Another player that broke through last season and has matured and taken on the vice captains role this season. Leads by example on the pitch but has momentary lapses in concentration, like away at Newcastle for their 2nd goal. Verdict – With the arrival of O`Dea his place could be at risk
Scott Davies
Started the season with a fantastic display against Nottingham Forest and is slightly unlucky to have found himself out of the side in the past 2 games. Possesses a fantastic delivery from set pieces, loves a shot and is full of running. Verdict – Plenty of potential but remains to be seen if he has the qualities to force his way into the starting line up on a regular basis considering the number of quality midfielders we have in the squad.
James Henry
Has long been dubbed as the best thing to come through the ranks since Scott Taylor for a number of seasons but has once again flattered to deceive so far this season. Started one game, away at Swansea, but still has a long way to go. Verdict – Will struggle to even make the matchday squad of 18 on a regular basis.
Simon Church
Just before the season started he was linked with a move to Liverpool, but I cannot see what all the fuss is about. Very lightweight, struggles to hold the ball up and certainly doesn`t look like he could recreate his goal scoring form for the Welsh under 21`s in a hooped shirt. Verdict – With Hunt fit, Rasiak signed and Shane Long, he won`t see much first team football
Hal Robson – Kanu
This young winger has really impressed on his first team appearances so far this season, direct and loves to run at a player and that is just what you need from a wide forward in a 4-3-3 formation. Verdict – Despite the arrival of McAnuff, if he keeps up his performances to the high standards we have seen so far he will be a big player in the season ahead.
Gylfi Sigurdsson
He has been the surprise package so far and has arguably been our best player in the last 2 league games against Sheff Utd and Barnsley. Set pieces are outstanding and another midfielder with a keen eye for goal, as goal against Burton in the Carling Cup proved. Verdict – Howard and Matejovsky will spend a lot of time on the bench if Sigurdsson keeps up this form.
