Losing at home is a feeling that Jaap Stam hasn’t had to deal with until now – the gaffer gives his thoughts on our defeat to Villa.

A last-minute penalty from Villa substitute Jordan Ayew, who also won the spotkick, condemned the Royals to their first defeat at home this season in the league. The visitors took the lead in the first period thanks to Kodija’s deflected effort, but we responded in the second half thanks to Yann Kermorgant rebounding from Williams’ penalty.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC site, the scary Dutchman said: ‘They didn`t create any clear cut chances though and we started to control the game. We weren`t creating loads of chances ourselves, but if you play against a team who put eleven men dropping in front of their own box, it’s very difficult to create chances.’

‘You need to be patient – and you saw they got fed up with running and chasing the ball in the second half. They tried to press us a bit higher as a result, spaces opened up and we won the penalty and scored the goal?by playing the ball and finding the right players at the right time in between the lines.’

Clear frustration and disappointment from the gaffer, who didn’t seem to be too complimentary of our opponents! You can’t argue with the fact they didn’t create any opportunities, but neither did we – we still have that same issue with creating chances at home when we have the play (73% of it!), so once we crack that nut, we should start firing.
