Success in first friendly

Reading won their first pre-season outing, with a Ryan Edwards goal securing a 1-0 win at Exeter City.

Arguably, the strongest side started in the first period and took a lead just eight minutes in, as Morrison’s long ball was knocked on by Pogrebnyak and Edwards remained composed in slotting past the keeper. Federici was forced into a good save just before the goal, in a first half which saw just those two pieces of action.

The second half team was much more youthful and it proved so, as Exeter were starting to take the game to us. The League Two outfit hit the post early on in the second period and forced some good last-ditch defending and smart handling from Mikkel Andersen. Overall, you have to argue that it was a very ‘pre-season game’ in its pace.

The stand out players were probably Obita, Hector and Edwards, especially Edwards, who looked very lively through the middle and on the wing in the first half. Akpan and Tshibola appeared a solid partnership for the second half team, but still plenty of work to be done and players to return from injury in the coming weeks.

Reading first half XI: Federici, Gunter, Morrison, Hector, Obita, Williams, Kuhl, Blackman, Edwards, Taylor, Pogrebnyak.

Reading second half XI: Andersen, Kelly, Pearce, Sweeney, Cummings, Long, Akpan, Tshibola, Griffin, Stacey, Tanner.
