Most Reading fans will read the headline and think ‘That can’t be true’ but rumours have circulated around various Reading-related forums and Twitter that Gylfi Sigurdsson could return to the Royals in January on loan.

The rumour started from HobNobAnyone forum memeber ‘IcelandicStokie’ who according to other board members, has had reliable sources in the past concerning Sigurdsson, seeing as he lives in Iceland. This is what he posted:

‘It has just been reported on the news here in Iceland, RAS2 Broadcasting, that Gylfi Sigurdsson could be returning to Reading in january on loan. Discussions have taken place. He is not considered a starting material at Hoffenheim with the emergence of Brazilian talent Roberto Firmino and Gylfi hasnt played 1 minute on the Bundesliga pitch since october 28th. Apparently he wants to go back to England. Will post more if I hear anything else on this.’

Gylfi signed for German side Hoffenheim in August last year for a club record fee of around £8 million. However, the 22-year old has struggled to get into Holger Stanislawski’s team this term, only playing once since the end of October.

He joined the Reading academy in 2005 and progressed into the first team. Gylfi has made 35 appearances so far for Hoffenheim, scoring 9 goals along with winning the Fans player of the Season award.

Again, this would seem unlikely as if he was ever to become available, the Premier League vultures would be circling around. However, it cannot be ruled out at this early stage, stranger things have happened!
