Sidwell to Join Newcastle?

Friends of Reading midfielder, Steve Sidwell have reported that the enigmatic Royals star has confirmed to them he will leave Reading for Newcastle in the summer.

According to friend`s accounts in the Sun newspaper, the 24-year-old who is out of contract at the end of the season will join Newcastle United on a Bosman signing ahead of a host of other clubs that include, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Everton.

But it is hard to assess how much truth there is in these rumours, after all it was only last week that Sidwell claimed he may be persuaded to stay with the Royals by the signing on of manager Steve Coppell on a new-two-year deal.

And just weeks before that he claimed that the acquisition of a European qualifier place could help him put pen to paper on a new deal?

To be honest, I won`t give up hope that he might sign but I really think Sidwell`s days as a Royal are coming to an end?

COME ON Reading fans you’re having a GREAT season yet only ONE member is on your members League board!!! Get involved, have your say and get the Royals moving up the Vital football table also.

On the subject of Sidwell, think he’s a class act and it is no wonder others are after him, Newcastle though!!! They have a history and have been in the top flight for sometime now but is this really much of a step forward (arguably at all!) compared to where the Royals are heading?!?!

agreed, I despise newcastle, you’ll probably find a few clubs were in for him who have had better seasons than newcastle but freddy sherpard has waved the cash oncemore like he did with parker, duff et al. shame, he would have been a cracking signing for Everton. Think he should have given reading another season to be honest.

Well said Hughes Da Man! It’s all gone a bit quiet around here recently, but to be fair, our season has also destilled a bit lately as well.

As for Sidwell, I’d much prefer for him to go to a club like Everton or Blackburn, who both have ambition, decent management, and a chance of domestic success. Newcastle, as you say, is a sideward step and the only motivation for Sidders must be the possible weight of next season’s wallet. We’ll see what happens, but I think he could do better than a Newcastle team that have been disappointing for years now.

how do you all feel about his imminent departure, i think he should give reading another season personally, one season doesn’t prove you are a premiership player, if he played aswell as he has this season next season he might even make a few more bigger teams stand up and take notice.

The fact that Newcastle owe the bank £98million means they wont be buying Sidwell or anyone else of any note in the near future.Hence why they have their youth team boss in charge of the 1st team & why they have been inactive in the transfer market recently.

Sidwell is available on a bosman at the end of the season, chalky76, meaning there will be no fee involved.

I agree, toffeetower, Sidwell would probably benefit from spending another season with us, but it would mean signing a new contract which would tie him down long-term. It’s been made apparent that he wants to ply his trade elsewhere, and whilst he’s done well for us this season, I’m sure he’s looking to move on to what he sees as bigger and better things.
