Reading boss Steve Coppell does not entertain the thought of losing Steve Sidwell in the upcoming January transfer window.

The tenacious midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season, and Coppell is keen for him to sign a new deal.

Coppell said, ‘The only way things could change is because he has the right to speak to a foreign club from the start of January. I don’t anticipate that happening though.

‘If he signed a pre-contract then you could say it would be difficult for him to match the commitment he’s showing now.

‘In that event I would sit down and talk with him because we have kind of relationship. But it’s not even an issue, he just wants to win games.

‘He wants to be a top player, he’s not resting on his laurels. He’s very much being looked at every game, he’s conscious of that, that’s why he has to keep on playing.’

‘We think we might have one window at some stage to have a go at signing him again but I don’t know, it’s not for me.

‘We want to keep him, we want to sign him. I don’t think we will sell him in January, come what may.”

Super Steve’s been fantastic for the most part of this season and it will be a huge lift if the club can secure his future.
