Royals striker prefers start to bench cameo role

Reading striker Adam Le Fondre accepts his role as an impact substitute, but would like to start more games.

The 26-year old scored the equalising penalty in the 3-2 victory over West Brom on Saturday, being brought on as a substitute in the 65th minute. Since Brian McDermott has opted for a five-man midfield, the forward is yet to start a game upfront, with Pavel Pogrebnyak being the preferred option for the Royals boss.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Alfie said: “I`m not too fond about coming off the bench – I would prefer to start. But it`s just a role I`ve got for the time being. Obviously I like being on the pitch when the goals go in. It`s a good message that when I come on the pitch we score goals but it`s just one of those things I guess.’

The former Rotherham striker also spoke about McDermott’s new system, admitting: ‘I think the gaffer knows my situation but we are playing 4-5-1 most of the time and I`ve not got the physique to play up front on my own. I`m just going to have to bide my time and wait for my chance to get back in the team.’

I don’t really agree with the idea that to play up front on your own, you need to have good strength and hold-up play. Admittedly, with our direct style, it is always going to suit someone of Pog’s physique though. Alfie has improved dramatically since we have been promoted, but can’t seem him getting past Pavel at the moment.
