Reading defender Nicky Shorey has put contract negotiations at the Madejski Stadium on hold until the end of the season.

It was previously reported that Shorey was close to signing a new deal with Reading, however it is emerging he is stalling on the deal and will re enter contract negotiations in the summer. It has been suggested that the England international wants to see if Reading will avoid relegation this season before making a decision upon his future.

Reading Director of football, Nicky Hammond is quoted as saying ‘I think he’d already made the decision (about whether he wanted to sign a new deal) at the start of this season and there’s no reason why that has changed.

‘The important thing now is that he performs well up until the summer and then we will speak again.’

I`m sure that Reading and the fans would have wanted Shorey to show his commitment to the club and sign the deal however it looks like Shorey is keeping his options open. His current deal runs out in 2009 so there is no rush for the club to tie him to a new contract.

Let us know what you think of how Shorey has played this season and do you think he should sign a new deal?

Like the pun dan! Had to read it a couple of times tho!! I reckon he’ll prob stay if we stay up, but will def be off if we go down. It’ll be interesting to see who does stay if we go down. Its a shame we got rid of simon cox cos he would hav been a good championship player.
