Royals keen on Spurs defender

Reading are interested in Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong, according to reports.

The 25-year old is very much out of favour at Tottenham at the moment and is keen for a permanent switch away from White Hart Lane, rather than a loan move. It is believed Spurs would be interested in a figure of around £4 million for Bassong, who has only made 44 appearances in his three-year tenure.

Royals boss Brian McDermott will be keen to add a central defender to his squad in the current transfer window, with Kaspars Gorkss and Alex Pearce the only recognised centre backs in the squad and the future of Sean Morrison very much uncertain. A move for former loan player Matt Connolly could also be a high possibility.

If you are looking for a ball playing left sided CB, with reasonable pace and technique, he would be a very decent buy at anything up to £6m ish

agree with ox here. Much maligned defender for Spurs who is not a bad player at all. Good in the tackle, not bad in the air and rapid. would be a good fit for Reading and the impressive style with which you played last year. Good luck for the coming season!

Thanks guys, seem he would be a very good acquisition. Did a very good job down at Newcastle but could be now have a future at Spurs with the departure of Ledley King?

Y19 – Two reasons why Bassong has no future at Spurs. 1) King hasn’t yet departed. He was about to receive a 1 year extension but then ‘Arry got sacked. The new man may not want him to be kept on, but I have a feeling he will stick around another year, especially now that Nelsen has gone to QPR and Gallas isn’t getting any younger. 2) Our first choice centre back is now Younes Kaboul. Bassong is a similar player, but, like Kaboul, needs to be playing along side a commanding leader who can usher him about. The pairing of the two is a total non-starter, and Kaboul is without doubt the better of the two.

Bassong is going to need to be partnered with an experienced man that leads the back line and I’m not sure that either Pearce or Gorkss would be the right man to play with him – Perhaps one of the other will, but who knows? One things for sure, with only two recognised centre backs on the books, you’d need a couple and could do much worse than Bassong

Some very good points there Dave. Personally, I would love to see Bassong here. Pearce and Gorkss are two very good defenders but certainly lack pace and the both of them could struggle when playing together against top class forwards. Bassong’s pace would certainly make him a useful asset in our ‘rather slow’ defence.
