Despite resting a number of players, the Royals cruised past Coventry thanks to goals from Grzegorz Rasiak, Simon Church and Jimmy Kebe. It was an excellent performance from Brian McDermott`s side who recorded their 10th win in 14th games.

McDermott opted to rest a number of players following the 2-1 defeat to Ipswich, where we played for an hour with 10 men, and brought in the likes of Jem Karacan, Jay Tabb, Grzegorz Rasiak and Simon Church to the starting line up. That meant we could afford to leave top scorer Gylfi Sigurdsson on the bench alongside Shane Long whilst Brian Howard wasn`t in the squad because of a neck injury.

We started well from the off and Church went close to opening the scoring in the first couple of minutes. We took the lead thanks to a goal from Rasiak, the only surprise being it took us 13 minutes to do so. Jobi McAnuff raced down the left, beat the right back and pulled the ball back to Karacan. The Turkish midfielder`s effort was a poor one but it hit Rasiak and wrong footed the goalkeeper and gave us a deserved lead.

We didn`t have to wait so long for the next goal, but before that Rasiak could have had another and Tabb almost scored a wonderful goal but his volley dropped just wide of the far post. But we were not to be denied and Church set up Bertrand who raced into the area but was brought down for a clear penalty. The Welsh striker stepped up to take it and scored.

Rasiak had a goal ruled out for offside but we continued to play some fantastic football, one of the best moves involving Bertrand who back heeled the ball to Church who put it on a plate for Kebe but he somehow failed to connect with the ball. Andy Griffin was also getting forward and his long range effort went narrowly wide.

The third goal arrived before the break, Church down the left crossed the ball back to the edge of the area where Kebe unleashed a thundering low drive that settled in the bottom corner. Typical Kebe, miss a chance from 3 yards but smash one in from 20 yards!

The Sky Blues must have had a bollocking at half time as they at least put up a fight in the second period and it was for a fight that the second half will be most remembered! Matt Mills took down the winger down the left hand side for a clear booking but Coventry striker Clinton Morrison decided to run 30 yards to get involved and started on Mills and Griffin before things eventually calmed down and Morrison was booked as well.

Despite the introduction on Hal Robson Kanu and young Nicholas Bignall there were to be no further goals but it was a pleasing performance and another well deserved three points.

Superb first half performance from a much changed side, second half was fairly forgetful though! McDermott will have a selection headache for Cardiff now…
