Reading are set to sign Sheffield United’s Chris Armstrong for a fee of around £750,000.

The Royals have been without a recognised left-back since the sale of Nicky Shorey to Aston Villa.

Since the departure of Shorey, winger Stephen Hunt has deputising but he was well and truly found out on Saturday as the Royals lost 4-2 at Charlton.

Despite several serious injuries that have threatened to end his career, Armstrong his higly rated amongst Blades fans and his pace and defensive abilities will be a huge asset to Reading.

The 26 year-old could sign as early as this afternoon and will be in line to make his debut at home to former manager Neil Warnock’s Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Meanwhile speculation is hotting up surrounding the future of Reading striker Kevin Doyle.

Doyle has been linked with a £7.5m move to Aston Villa. Doyle missed a penalty at Charlton on Saturday and his confidence looks shot to pieces, a move could be just what he needs to re-capture the form he showed in his first two seasons at Reading.
