Reading are keeping tabs on Derry winger James McClean as a possible signing, following some fine performances in the Irish Premier Division.

He admitted to the Derry Journal that a chance to play in England would be too good to turn down, saying “Every player wants to improve and play at the highest level possible and I’m no different”.

The ex-Northern Ireland Under-21 international is being looked at by a number of other Championship clubs, most notably recently relegated Blackpool.

Derry’s manager however has said he doesn’t want McLean to leave at this moment in time, as they are in a crucial period, with the league title and a Europa league place at stake.

The 5’9 winger has scored 18 goals in 73 appearances for the Candystripes, which has gained him many admirers, Brian McDermott being one of them.

Many fans may see this as umabitious but considering our recent acquisitions from Ireland (Doyle and Long), it could be a very shrewd move by McDermott. I can only hope Mooney was a one off!
