Brendan Rodgers is closing in on his second summer signing after agreeing a fee with Doncaster Rovers to sign defender Matthew Mills. Subject to the centre back agreeing personnel terms, and passing a medical, he will go straight into the squad for Saturdays season opener against Nottingham Forest. The fee agreed has not been disclosed but is believed to be in the region of £2.3 million.

Swindon born Mills began his career at Southampton when they were a Premiership club and spent time out on loan at Coventry and Bournemouth before a permanent move to Man City followed. However he found regular first team football hard to come by and spent time out on loan at Colchester before joining Doncaster in 2007, initially on loan again.

The club hope to confirm the deal on Tuesday, and confirm Mills as a Reading player.
