Howard has spent the past year with Sheffield United, but made a name for himself whilst at Barnsley where he was club captain and also scored the winner in at Anfield in an FA cup tie the season before last.

After the Blades signed James Harper onloan, Howard found himself surplus to requirements at Brammel Lane and jumped at the chance to join the Royals.

He has joined on a permanent deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £300,000, signed a deal until 2012 and could make his debut a week on Saturday against Doncaster.

Brendan Rodgers was pleased to have completed the deal after a long wait and told the official site-, ‘Brian Howard is a big player at this level. He is a great reference for the team, he can also create and score. I’ve admired him from afar and this is the perfect fit for him and his game.’

‘Overall it’s been great business by the club, everyone has done terrifically well, especially in the final 48 hours. Now we move forward and be really happy with the group.’
