We are two thirds through what is becoming a very miserable season, but Jaap Stam is hoping a week in sunny Spain will change our fortunes for the final third.

A 26-man squad has jetted off this morning to participate in double training sessions in the heat, but won’t be playing any friendlies while abroad. They will return to Berkshire on Saturday, three days before our trip to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest on the Tuesday.

No game this Saturday due to Sheffield United’s progress in the FA Cup meant this opportunity arose for Stam to take the players away for a little while, which let’s hope gives them a needed break away and a chance to rebuild. Who know if it will help, but it’s worth a shot!

The club have confirmed that the injured players who won’t be travelling are Callum Harriott, skipper Paul McShane, Joseph Mendes, Stephen Quinn, Jordan Obita and Tommy Elphick. This means that John Swift has travelled, who has missed nearly two months of action with injury.

A good boost to have Swifty back, who we have missed massively in midfield. I imagine a few younger players have travelled also, but the club haven’t confirmed a full list. It could do the players a world of good and the backroom staff too, we’ll see if it pays off!
