Vital Reading gives our opinion on the player’s performances from the Capital One Cup victory over Newport on Tuesday night. Goals from Pavel Pogrebnyak, Nick Blackman and Craig Tanner sealed a 3-1 victory for the Royals.

Alex McCarthy – 5 – He couldn`t do a lot about the goal and didn`t have many saves to make. His distribution was OK, but kicking was dreadful nearly getting caught out on a few occasions when closed down by the Newport striker – expect Feders to start again this Saturday.

Chris Gunter – 6 – A quiet game for the stand-in skipper, with most of Newport`s play coming down our left. It was a shame he didn`t get forward more in the game, he didn`t show much overlapping with Blackman, which opens the space out wide with him driving inside.

Alex Pearce – 7 – A solid game from Pearcey, who was probably tested more than he thought he was going to be. Despite a shaky start, anything that was crossed into the area, especially in latter stages of the second half of Newport pressure, was defended very well by him and Morro.

Sean Morrison – 7 – Same as above.

Shaun Cummings – 6 – He seemed to have been targeted by Newport in the first half, as he often found himself one-on-one with Jackson, often coming out second best. Cummings got better as the game went on though, it`s just a shame he doesn`t get forward much, as his Wigan goal proved he can.

Michael Hector – 5 – A poor game from the academy graduate, who was often careless with his passing. Too many times he played a few blind passes that weren`t on and cross field balls that got nowhere near their man. It`s a shame considering he had a solid game there against Wigan, but his future should lie as a central defender.

Jordan Obita – 6 – Young Obita once again took a deep-lying midfield role, but failed to have an impact on the game, despite being the only player that wanted the ball most of the time. He went wide left for some of the second half, but again failed to make an impact there.

Nick Blackman – 7 – Could it really be his season? Don`t get me wrong, his touch was off at times in this game, but he seems to have found confidence with his strong pre-season, so let`s hope he continues that in the league campaign. Good feet and finish for his goal.

Simon Cox – 6 – Decent first performance from the recent signing, despite looking a tad rusty. Like Obita, he struggled to have an impact in the game in the number ten role, but looked full of energy and eager to impress.

Jake Taylor – 5 – An anonymous game from the young Welshman, who looks lost out on the left side. He doesn`t have the pace or power to trouble most full backs at this level, so putting him there doesn`t really help his development.

Pavel Pogrebnyak – 8 – Man of the Match – The only player that showed any outstanding class in the game. His goal was superbly executed in the finish and timing of his run. Pog`s touch and hold up play was very good again, it was just a shame that he didn`t link up with Cox more often.

Hope Akpan – 6 – Decent cameo appearance from Akpan, who will want to prove a point to the manager considering a central defender is starting ahead of him. Judging by this game, Hope should be ahead of Hector at the moment.

Craig Tanner – 7 – What a debut for the 19-year old, scoring on his first Madejski Stadium appearance – the academy graduate started and finished the move in style.

Ryan Edwards – 6 – Didn`t really have enough time to have an impact on the game, but looked lively and played a notable part in Tanner`s goal.
