O`Brien admits poor discipline

West Ham defender Joey O`Brien has confessed that he deserved to get sent off against Reading on Saturday, with Reading scoring seconds later and ended up losing the game 3-0.

The Republic of Ireland international reacted after he was caught late by compatriot Noel Hunt for the first booking and the second a poorly timed challenge on Reading captain Jobi McAnuff.

O`Brien told West Ham TV: “Of course I didn`t expect my day to turn out like that. It was a very bad day for the football club and for me personally getting sent-off and watching the boys concede three goals.”

“To be fair, the first one was silly on my behalf. I reacted to Noel because I thought he left a little bit in the challenge and I think the ref had given the free-kick. Being booked, I suppose committing a foul so soon after the incident it was in the referee`s mind and he sent me off.”

He signed for the Hammers on a free transfer during the summer transfer window after he was released from Bolton last season. It was also the 25-year old`s first red card in his entire seven year career.
