No Transfer Second Chances

Steve Coppell has had a pop at the players who turned their noses up at the chance to sign Reading in summer.

The Reading boss suggested that a player not wanting to come to the club played a huge huge role in Reading`s relatively quiet summer

‘There weren’t many foreign players who wanted to come here because they’d never heard of us or they were thinking: ‘Reading will go straight back down again’. Coppell told the Daily Express.

It was obviously an issue for all of this season`s promoted teams, Watford and Sheff Utd did not sign any substantially acclaimed players.

‘One of the big factors for us when we’re trying to sign players is whether they want to come here.

‘We went down an awful lot of blind alleys. When we offered them the chance to come to Reading, they asked ‘Who?’

But since the season began Reading have proven themselves capable in the Premiership. Notable results against Tottenham, Man Utd and Middlesborough have shown Reading could have what it takes to survive in one of the world`s leading leagues.

‘Now players in Europe, Africa and Asia might be a bit more familiar with us.”

But Coppell insists that those fickle enough to have shunned Reading in summer but might now be eager to jump on the bandwagon will not be given a second chance.

‘I won’t be going back for any of the players we missed out on during the summer.’
