No Scunny return for Williams

The Royals signed left back Marcus Williams in the summer on a free transfer from Scunthorpe and he started the season as our first choice left back. He even took over the number 3 shirt from the then injured Chris Armstrong but has since slipped down the pecking order.

He played the first few games of the season but was injured against Nottingham Forest and missed the Leicester game, our first win of the season. He has failed to get back in the side since due to the form of Ian Harte and the surprise return to fitness of Armstrong.

He went on loan to Peterborough but the Posh lost 5-1 on his debut and he only made 3 starts during his time at London Road. He is now back at the Madejski Stadium but nowhere near the first team.

He had been linked with a move back to Scunthorpe but the Iron have now come out and said they would not be interested in taking him back. Manager Ian Baraclough said,

‘Marcus’s wages have probably rocketed out of our bracket. He left the club and wanted to seek his future elsewhere. I don’t think he’d be an option for us.’

Whilst it must be frustrating for Williams to not be playing first team football I would say to him, don’t lose faith. He played well I think at the start of the season and didn’t have enough time to establish himself in the side. We are blessed with decent left backs at this level but Williams should stick with it at least until the summer, it only takes an injury and he is back in the side. The same thing happened to Shaun Cummings last season and he came back and had a good run in the team and can consider himself unlucky to be sat on the bench at the moment.
