Jem Karacan is the man chosen by Nigel Adkins to be the new club captain of Reading Football Club.

The 25-year old has been with the club since he was 14 years of age, going onto make 166 appearances for the Royals. Since Jobi McAnuff left the club last month, Adkins has been evaluating his options for a new skipper, with Gunter, Morrison and Guthrie also mentioned.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: ‘Jem is ready to step up and show the leadership qualities he’s got within him. He’s come through the system, played in the first team, he’s demonstrated he’s got the ability that is required to be a leader.’

Recent injuries have restricted the Turkish midfielder to just 28 league appearances in the past two seasons, but is doing well in his recovery from a broken ankle suffered against Leeds last September. Jem tweeted the following about his appointment as captain:

A good and popular appointment on the whole to make Karacan captain – I had my money on Gunter, but you can see the logic in Adkins’ decision. It’s a shame about his current injury issue, but hopefully he will be back playing within the next few months with the armband.
