New signing Joseph Mills admits the style of football that Reading play under Brian McDermott was one of the many reasons why he joined the Royals.

Joe, younger brother of Matt, signed a one-year deal from Southampton for an undisclosed fee. The 21-year old also revealed the first person he spoke to about the move was his brother, the former captain at the Madejski Stadium.

He told the RFC official site: ‘When I knew the interest was there from Reading Matt was the first person I spoke to. He had nothing but good words to say about the club, he loved every minute of his time here and I knew this was a club who knew what they were doing.’

Due to the relation to his brother, he also came down to watch the Royals play on some occasions. The England youth international said: ‘Any time I didn’t have a weekend game I was straight down to watch Reading play, so I know the style that we play here – the tempo in which they play is another thing that attracted me to the club.’

Brian McDermott was pleased with his capture of the Swindon-born player. ‘He’s obviously Matt’s brother, a left-back who can play in midfield as well – a versatile player who can pass the ball. We tried to get him into the Academy when he was only 12.’

Mills also admitted he was mainly a left back even though he can be deployed as a left midfielder. He also told the RFC official site he was looking forward to not facing Jimmy Kebe again!
