Scunthorpe came to the Madejski Stadium and went away with a 2-1 victory, thanks to two poor goals from the Royals point of view. Brian McDermott was unhappy with the way we defended, and it was not surprising.

He told the Official Site, ‘We didn’t defend as well as we would have liked and thats the end result.’

Whilst it was clear the first goal had an element of luck about it the second goal was a very poor one to concede.

‘I look at the two goals, they got a real lift from the first one. It just fell to one of their guys and he scored, that happens. The second one was a free header from a set play which you don’t want in key areas.’

On the subject of the first goal, McDermott insists we must react better to set backs. ‘I think maybe at the time we felt there was an injustice but you have got to deal with setbacks better than we did.’

All in all in was a pretty disappointing start to the season and we will be looking for a morale boosting win at Portsmouth next Saturday.
