With a number of first team regular’s missing through injury or suspension, McDermott was delighted to have recorded such an important win over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. He told the official Reading site after the game,


‘I talked to the players about the importance of the squad, you hear a lot of managers talk about it but I genuinely mean it.’


He continued by talking about a number of important players who have come in and had positive impacts on the team, including midfielder Jay Tabb.


‘Jay Tabb has done a really good job in the last couple of games – he’s not the biggest fella in the world but he has got the biggest heart. Brian Howard did a good job in the middle, Jimmy scored two good goals and was excellent again and I was delighted for Grzegorz as well.’


With players like Matt Mills and Brynjar Gunnarsson set to return from injury, and Shane Long from suspension, ahead of next Sunday’s game against Villa he could have a selection headache ahead of the quarter final tie.
