Reading boss Brian McDermott has stated his pride in his teams effort as they defeated Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor, thanks to a Jem Karacan injury time winner.

Not much went the Royals’ way throughout the game with Adam le Fondre having a goal disallowed and having a very strong penalty shout turned down by referee Phil Gibbs but fought for the three points in the end.

McDermott told the official RFC site: ‘Towards the end of the game we were in the ascendancy and there’s no doubt in my opinion we deserved the victory.’

‘I was so proud of the players, and the supporters behind the goal, it’s a great day for them and I felt we deserved to win. Burnley have been on a really good run, we did what we had to, the players carried it out really well.’

The former Slough manager was also pleased the refereeing decisions turned out not to be crucial. ‘We also thought it was a goal [when Le Fondre had a goal ruled out], so we would have felt hard done by if we didn’t win.’

‘I’m glad we are not talking about the penalty that he didn’t give, because it was the most blatant penalty I’ve seen for years.

The Reading squad will now move to Tuesday nights clash with Nigel Clough’s Derby who currently sit in an impressive fourth place in the Championship.
