McDermott demands for more ‘ruthlessness’

Reading manager Brian McDermott admits he has once again been left disappointed after his side threw away another lead, saying they deserved a point from the game.

The 51-year old witnessed his side take the lead for the seventh time in the league this season, but once again it was the same old story for the Royals as Wigan were to come from behind to steal the victory in injury time. Sean Morrison gave Reading the lead at half time, but a rampant Wigan came out in the second period and outplayed the visitors.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, McDermott said: ‘The bottom line is that we’ve given a goal away with a minute to go which is crazy, just crazy and that was down to us. We have to take a draw at least, we were masters of our own downfall. We’ve got enough experience out there to know the momentum of the game.’

‘We have to be more ruthless. At 90-odd minutes gone we had the ball in the corner and we have to take a point. Both teams had had opportunities but you have to take the point. Any point away is a decent one. We have to learn from that very quickly because this league is unforgiving. We have to see games through. We have to be more ruthless.’

I have already stated my frustration at our want to try and win games when a point is in our grasp, as any point away from home is valuable for a side like us. Just sit back for the last five minutes and let Wigan result to long ball, which we should comfortably deal with. Instead, we sacrificed it and the left was exposed again for their winner.
