Everyone is looking forward to Sunday’s big game against Aston Villa, not least the Royals manager Brian McDermott. He has guided us to the quarter final stage for the first time in 83 years, beating Liverpool, Burnley and West Brom along the way. Now he can’t wait to pit himself against Martin O’Neill, again!

McDermott told the Reading Post, ‘I remember quite a few years ago I was assistant manager at Yeovil and the manager was away so I took the game against Wycombe. We drew 2-2 and Martin was competitive and you can see he wants to win every game.’

The former Celtic manager has guided Villa to Wembley once already this season, last weekend’s Carling Cup final defeat to Man Utd, a game McDermott watched from the stands.

‘I went to the game on Sunday and it was a great atmosphere, Villa are a very good side and started off really well and got the early goal. I know Martin would have thought it unfortunate as well.’

However he was quick to play up his sides chances this weekend, and won’t focus too much on the strengths of the Villa squad.

‘They`ve got good players in wide areas and up the pitch, but we’ll do what we do in every game. We look at our strengths and will play to them.”

Whatever happens on Sunday, McDermott can be pleased with the work he has done since he tokk charge of the side, but I bet he would love to cap it all with a trip to Wembley!

Keep it Vital Reading for all the build up to Sunday’s big game.
