Long Term Solution!

Shane Long is hoping that the Republic of Ireland’s near certainty not to qualify for the 2008 European championships will give him a chance to stake a claim for a regular long term place.

With it almost impossible that the Republic of Ireland can make it Shane Long is hoping that he will be given a chance in the upcoming matches, starting with the qualifiers against Germany and Cyprus, as Steve Staunton looks ahead to the World Cup qualifying campaign which gets underway next season, “I’ll treat the last three games as a chance to prove myself and keep my name in the manager’s thoughts, Shane Long told the media.

“Before you know it, qualification for the World Cup will begin.”

It would seem that Shane Long does have a good case here, as although the Republic of Ireland can still technically qualify it is highly unlikely so the chances are Steve Staunton will be looking to try and few different things in the near future.

Long makes a good point but as much as he could get a regular place he would firstly have to get that regular starting place with Reading, which will be difficult with Dave Kitson, Leroy Lita, and of course his Ireland team mate Kevin Doyle ahead of him.

i like this guy he caused the krauts a few problems the other night when he came on and i could see him gettin a regular place in the ireland team as staunton rates him so if he doesnt have a startin place for you guys he could see the internationals as a shop window so to speak to get a transfer so he can play regularly

That could be the case. He is till young, but he is very much at the back of the queue at the moment isn’t he with Reading. He was unlucky that he had to draw out of the squad injured wasn’t he?
