Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has named his squad for the first game at the new Aviva Stadium, against Argentina in August, and Shane Long is in it. The showpiece game against the South Americans is to open the rebuilt Lansdowne Road on August 11th, which will mean the striker will miss our trip to Torquay in the Carling Cup 1st round.

Long had struggled to find his form at times last season, and had to serve a number of games suspension for 2 red cards, but ended it in fine form and will be full of confidence going into the new season.

Other Reading connections in the squad are former striker Kevin Doyle, who is sure to lead the line, and Celtic’s Darren O’Dea who spent time on loan at the Mad Stad last season.

Hal Robson Kanu and Jake Taylor have also been called up for the Wales under 21’s whilst Simon Church will be in the full squad.
