Reading’s new striker Adam Le Fondre has admitted it will be a tough job occupying the Reading number 9 shirt, following his transfer from Rotherham last week.

Previous number nine’s have been Republic of Ireland internationals Shane Long and Kevin Doyle who were big hits at the Madejski Stadium but Le Fondre said he aims to do the same.

Le Fondre, speaking exclusively to the Reading Chronicle, said: ‘Reading have a great record of developing players. When you look at past strikers like Kevin Doyle and Shane Long it makes you believe you can do the same.’

The 24-year old striker has already scored 4 goals this season for the Millers and attracted attention from other Championship clubs but Le Fondre felt this was a good move for him.

‘There were a couple of bids knocked back by Rotherham, but all along I kept my head down and kept working hard. In return, they have let me go for the right price and it’s a brilliant move for me.’

People have also likened him to the likes of Jamie Cureton because of their small height and good finishing ability.

Le Fondre has also said of what Reading fans should expect of him: “As long as I can get the chances I think I`ll score goals. The goal size doesn`t change when you come to the Championship, it`s just obviously about me getting chances and putting them away.’

The former Rochdale player is expected to be given his first start against Watford next week with McDermott keen to reshuffle his squad in an attempt to stop the Royals rot.
