The deal to sign South African international Bongani Khumalo is edging ever closer as Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp revealed Khumalo is close to joining the Royals on loan until the end of the season.

We reported to you a few days ago about interest in the defender with McDermott being an admirer of the 24-year old.

The Spurs boss admitted it would be hard for him to get into the first team with the likes of Dawson, King, Gallas and Bassong ahead of him in the pecking order. Redknapp stated ‘Yeah, it looks like it will happen’.

He went onto add: ‘We have the option of a recall in January, but it will be a good move for him. He’s a good lad.’

This signing would seem to ease the Royals’ defensive worries with only two recognised centre backs in the squad. Although, former Royal Ibrahima Sonko is on trial and looks likely to earn a contract with his former club.
