How about these two?

Its quite obvious that we will not be spending anymore money in this transfer window (and I am not too sure about the one’s following that either!), but it is clear we desperatly short of centre backs. This will only get worse now our own manager has no idea when Ivar Ingimarsson will return from injury.

The main problem for me is Alex Pearce, he is dreadful, so a lot of the time I think we only have one centre back. Matt Mills is a solid player but prone to the odd error himself so the two as a partnership is not good enough for this level.

Even if Ingimarsson was to return today, would he actually be an improvement? He is injury prone beyond belief and he did not look even half like the the player who was our Player of the season in the Premier League in 2006/07, last season when he did play.

So with no money to buy a centre back, McDermott already saying we cannot afford Zurab Kizhanishvili – even on loan – where does that leave us? Well how about either, or both, of these two? Both available on free transfers and attracting interest from clubs at this level, we should be competing with.

Firstly Callum Davenport. The former West Ham has had some well published personnel problems in the last year after he was stabbed this time last year. He has won his court battle’s though, has recovered from the injuries sustained and is now training with Leeds, after similar trial spells at Notts Forest and West Brom. Whilst no one has taken a chance on him yet there could be many reasons for that, not least the fact that all three clubs have a number of quality centre backs, that we could only dream of, and do not want to pay for someone who would only sit on the bench. Worth a chance in my opinion, on a one year deal, surely we have nothing to lose.

And how about Jay DeMerit? Played all 4 games for the USA at the World Cup, including the game against England, and is without a club after his release by Watford. I have not heard of much interest in him, I am sure there has been though, and he could do a job for us without a doubt. Always solid during his days at Vicarage Road, including 1 year in the Premiership, and still good enough for international football. Maybe he is holding out for a good deal as the transfer window draws to a close, perhaps we could offer him something.

I had thought that the club were going to rely on young centre backs Michael Hector and Jack Mills as back up, and they had high hopes of these two to perform for a couple of games at first team level this season if needed. However both of them have been loaned to Oxford City, so that proves what level they are at!

What do you think of Davenport and DeMerit? Would they improve our squad – surely they could not do any worse?

Both of these two are decent championship players at best, but would still walk into our side. Says it all really…
