Harper, 25, has a deal that is up in the summer and even though contract talks were opened back in October, nothing has been agreed between the two parties yet.

It has been reported that there has been interest from Dutch sides PSV and Feyenoord as well as rumours linking the player with Everton.

But as for the player stalling on signing a contract while he waits to see if a move is made for his services are utter nonsense.

Hammond said: ‘To suggest that James is stalling on signing a new deal is just not true. Negotiations take time. There is so much to sort out and finalise and discussions are still on-going.

‘They were held up a little over the New Year, but only because of the availability of James’ agent – nothing else. But I can assure everyone that all parties are keen to move it forward and we hope to start talking again this week?

The Chelmsford born midfielder has been with the Royals since February 2001 making more than 200 appearances for the club
