Hargreaves coming on loan to Reading?

Reports have stated that Reading could be chasing Manchester City midfielder Owen Hargreaves on a loan deal.

Like many rumours, this is unconfirmed and probably absolute rubbish. It has stemmed from speculation on the social networking site Twitter, that the 31-year old could be approached by the Royals, now the loan window is open.

Since signing for Roberto Mancini’s side on a free transfer this summer, the injury-stricken midfielder has only made one league appearance for the Premier League leaders. The former England man could be tempted to get match fitness in a lower league.

This deal would seem very ambitious for the Royals but considering Brian McDermott only just missed out on City’s Wayne Bridge, who would be on similar wages, you would not put this deal beyond the realms of possibility.

A potential long-term thigh problem for Mikele Leigertwood could also be a pushing factor for McDermott to get the Canadian-born player in. Missing out on Keith Andrews would also imply that McDermott is keen to add to the options in centre-midfield.

Actually, hargreaves is on a pay-as-you-play deal, heavily incentivised towards appearance bonuses – so there is no reason to suggest Reading couldn’t afford him. TBH, I’d be happy for Owen to go out on a months loan to get his fitness levels up, as long as he returns in one piece ready for the run in!

Fair play to him for doing a pay-as-you-play! Proves he wasn’t just after the money but he certainly still has a lot to offer as a footballer.
