Reading director of football Nicky Hammond has expressed his confidence that midfielder James Harper will soon be putting pen to paper on a new contract.

Harper has been linked with a move to Charlton Athletic as well as Dutch side Feyenoord when his current contract runs out in the summer.

But many Royals fans cannot see why a move would be beneficial to the player when in all probability he will be playing football in the Premiership with Reading if he was to stay.

The 25 year old has been an ever present in the Royals league games this season and has been a very influential member of the side.

He said: ‘We’ve been speaking with James’ representatives this week and I’m confident. It’s been going on for some time now but we are hopeful of bringing discussions to a conclusion soon.

‘James has been with us for several years, he’s a vital part of what we are trying to build here and it’s important to everyone associated with this football club that we try to keep players such as James.

‘It’s taken a bit of time but these things are not sorted overnight these days. He’s a consummate professional and his focus has been elsewhere recently with the games against Southampton and Sheffield United, but by the end of next week I’m very hopeful that it will be at it’s conclusion.’

The only reason it is taking so long is the player wants a premiership deal, not a championship one

Steve Coppell popped his head back round the press-room door last night to ask for the code to open the exit door. The Reading manager may not know his way out of Bramall Lane, but he has the key to the Barclays Premiership after this result.
