Reports have stated that West Ham United have put in a bid worth around £8m for Reading’s talisman Shane Long.

The Republic of Ireland international has been a wanted man ever since his best scoring season in which he scored 25 goals in all competitions.

We reported to you last week that West Brom were leading the chase for the 24-year old striker.

However, Reading boss Brian McDermott stated that Long would only go to a Premier League club, not a Championship club.

McDermott told the Reading post: ‘He won`t go to another Championship club, but if a Premier League club comes in, I won`t stand in his way.’

Reading were looking for around the £8m mark for the Irishman and are not prepared to lose him for free next summer when his current contract runs out.

Long scored a brace against Northampton on Saturday and is set to start in tonight’s friendly at Bristol Rovers.

In other news, reports in Scotland have stated we are on the verge of signing former US college striker Craig Sutherland on a free.
