New Reading defender Chris Gunter has said he needs to make an impact straight away with the Premier League new boys and is looking forward to that opportunity.

The 22-year old completed his move to the Royals on Tuesday and is currently with the first-team squad on their pre-season tour of Portugal. Gunter does have some experience of playing Premier League football, during his short tenure with Tottenham, where he made five appearances in the league. However, the Welshman believes he deserves his chance at Premier League football again.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Gunter said: ‘I’m really looking forward to this opportunity. If you form a team spirit, a togetherness, you’ll always do well in football – and if you work hard you’ll get your rewards. Reading have certainly done that in the last few years. Hopefully that can carry on. Right now, I need to focus on impressing everyone at this club and I’m really excited to get going.’

The former Cardiff City player did however pick up a knock in training yesterday and will wear a protective boot, which also means he will play no part in tomorrow’s friendly against CDR Quarteirense. Gunter will provide good competition for Shaun Cummings in the build-up to the new season, but who do Reading fans think should start? Does Cummings deserve his chance or does Gunter’s experience prevail?
