Former Reading defender Nicky Shorey is being linked with a move back to the Royals, according to Sky Sports.

Some sources on social networking site Twitter have also claimed that the deal is extremely close, with the 31-year old currently completing a medical. Nicky’s father Steve is still the chief scout at Reading and the former Leyton Orient full-back has hinted at a return to Berkshire.

Shorey is currently a free agent, after his two-year contract with West Brom expired. The former England international made 267 appearances for the Royals during his seven-year tenure, scoring 12 goals. The Romford-born defender also earned two caps for the England team under Steve McClaren in 2007.

could never make my mind up about him when he was at Villa!

Has one of the best left foots I have ever seen but he is certainly not getting younger and is not the fastest, similarly to Ian Harte. Would prefer a younger option but wouldn’t be against a return for Shorey.
